What is a Domain name?
|
|
|
A Domain name is a unique name followed by a TLD (such as .com
.net or .org). This unique name identifies your Web site on the
internet, and allows visitors to find your site amongst the millions
of other domains on the Web.
Top level domains are designed to give some meaning to a domain
name. COM was the original TLD. ORG is designated for non-profit
organizations. NET was originally designated for Service Providers
such as Telcos and Web Hosts. The rules have laxed somewhat, allowing
companies and individuals to use any and all of the available TLDs,
with the exception of .GOV (government) and .EDU (education).
It is common practice for an internet business to aquire all common
TLDs for their domain to prevent Web site spoofing. |
